• The FUND RAISING COMMITTEE coordinates the raising of funds needed for Habitat's program.  Approximately $60,000 is needed for each house built.  This amount includes funds for acquiring a lot, building a house, and sending a tithe for the work of Habitat in underdeveloped nations of the world.  Eventually, over twenty years the initial capitalization will be returned to Habitat through monthly mortgage payments from the homeowner families, but the funds are needed up front to get a house built and occupied

The committee's work includes organizing fund-raising events and seeking donations from individuals, churches, businesses and other organizations.  A donor program called the Carpenter's Club seeks commitments to sustained giving of small and moderate size donations.  An organized campaign of seeking contributions from major donors is needed, but is not yet well established.  Working with the Fund-Raising Committee is an excellent opportunity for a person who has good ideas for fundraising and is willing to meet with potential donors and ask for their support.  We make no apology for challenging our entire community, including the affluent, to support Habitat's mission.

The Fund -Raising Committee

Habitat Fund Raising Committee Member Job Description

The Fund Raising Committee is responsible for coordinating the raising of funds needed to conduct the business of River City Habitat for Humanity. The tasks to be coordinated by the committee shall include fundraising campaigns, special fund-raising events, and the cultivation of major donors. This committee emphasizes and promotes the importance of Christian stewardship in the servicing of donors and supporters.

The first priority, which all special events should accomplish, is communicating the need for support. The ministry of Habitat is accomplished through the financial and material donations, and the work, of many individuals and organizations. Any special event should accomplish one or more of the following goals for support:

  • Increase the visibility of Habitats ministry in the community.
  • Serve as a focus for the Habitat faithful and other supporters to be heartened by the progress that has been accomplished.
  • Recognize these individuals, churches, businesses and other organizations which have supported the work of Habitat.

The second priority, which should also be accomplished if possible, is the enlargement of the donor base. The addition of new or prospective donors to the mailing list is a much greater benefit than the actual dollars raised through the event.

The third priority is to generate money from the event. Asking for money, such as taking an offering at a house dedication, may generate only small amounts of funds, but it does emphasize the need for support, which is the first priority purpose.

Serving on the Fund Raising Committee is a wonderful contribution for a volunteer who believes in Habitat and understands that we can only build houses with the generosity of people who care enough to give.

The chairman of the Committee reports to the Executive Director and minutes from the committee are recorded and provided to the secretary of the Board.
